Since so many of us cannot stand pet stores big and small I figured we could all rant in here about our experiences at these places. It makes me feel better and I'm sure it will work for a few others as well.
In the beginning I was a total n00b at reptiles and believed blindly what my boss had told me because they bred for most of their reptiles at the time. Soon after I got Magellan, my 1st beardie alot of the things my boss told me didn't seem too safe or right so I went home and researched and found a lot of the things were wrong so I came back and returned alot of what I bought. She got mad at me and asked why and I told her flat out, these are unsafe husbandry practices and I want a long term pet, not an animal I can just dispose of if something happens. I told her that if she wanted to sell more and have healthier animals that she should make changes. Luckily for me, Magellan wasn't in the pet store very long (he was born there) so I made sure I did the best even though I still made mistakes along the way. Eventually my boss saw the difference in what my reptiles looked like and what the store's did and she eventually stopped carrying the sands, coil UVB, etc etc and finally listened to me.
Second instance, I went to Petsmart to spend a gift card (or else I wouldn't have even been there) and I brought Magellan with me to keep me company and to fit him for the right hide. I was browsing around and all of a sudden I had a crowd of people around me amazed at Magellan and they all asked me questions on beardie care. I answered all the questions based on all my knowledge and what I've experienced and so on. A Petsmart employee came over and started arguing with me saying calci sand is the way to go not tile or repticarpet. So I turn to him and said, "If I'm doing such a terrible job, why is my dragon 3+ years old and healthy as can be while your 3 week old dragons are half dead in your tanks?" He then blamed the wholesaler and I came back with, "If you guys knew what you were doing you wouldn't have accepted these dragons because a person with good knowledge of them knows you shouldn't buy a dragon from a wholesaler or even as a pet younger than 6 weeks and 6 inches. After than he had no comeback and "called backup" to make me leave.
I used to work at PetCo that was very short lived (2 weeks exactly). Basically I flipped my lid on how they took care of their sick animals and the animals in general. This happened when a guy came in asking about his beardie and how it was sick and not doing well. I ran down all the info with him and found it to be his temps were too low and his UVB was bad. Long story short, my manager came over heard me telling him to do the right things told the guy I was lying, then decided as "punishment" to make me work night shifts and be on call. I quit the job and told them where to shove their caresheets.
