Ceramic heat emitters are the only safe nighttime heating-beardies can't feel heat on their bellies, so you run the risk of burns if you use a heating pad or hot rock. You don't need any heat as long as your house stays between 65-70F at night. Desert reptiles are used to large temperature drops, so he should be fine.
Keeping a backup CHE can be useful for if your house gets too cold during the winter.
