Hi All

My family has adopted a bearded dragon recently as the previous owner has moved abroad. She has developed a sore just under her chin. She is otherwise eating well wand seems happy.
Could someone tell me if I need to seek medical attention for this? She is homed in a new enclosure which has a wire mesh frame and she does climb it so wondering if it is a friction sore. She use to be kept in an open enclosure with Perspex sides. We have a cat which we cannot trust on it’s on with the Beardi.

Thanks
Ed

Hi Ed
Please post pics of the chin -- did she come w/ this or has this developed since you had her? Also the tank your keeping her in now post pics of that as well -- what kind of UVB are you using for her? coil or a long tube fixture ? where is it placed for the tank ? I would keep the cat away from her as shes going to go thru relocation stress and the less stress around her will help her adjust to the tank and surroundings also being in a new tank and not her usual one is also stressful - dragons do not like change and she has just gone thru a big one

Hi Sadie

Thanks for the quick reply it very kind of you !

I know the relocation stress as my family also relocated to Spain 9 months ago

We have had her for 3 weeks. I noticed 1-2 weeks ago that skin/scales on the chin were darker than the rest of the body in the same patch (it may have been since we got her but I didn’t notice). I thought nothing of it and then 2 days it was sore as per the picture.
I purpose built the enclosure for her and she is outside at the moment as it is 26c at night (advice from the previous owner).
We went to the vets yesterday but they do not specialise in reptiles so we have been referred and need to make an appointment.

She seems quite happy but I’m no expert. I’ve fed her and she is wondering around the garden outside now.

Any advice would be appreciated.

That wire is the cause... new environment started jumping the wire. As always said here put raw unpasteurized honey. That case looks to be meant for chickens.

Thanks Sadie. I had best of intentions of course but advice noted.

What do I do with the raw unpasteurised honey ?

Hi Sorry I meant Jabda and I can see what I do with it now.

Would you suggest changing the enclosure wire material ? Would Perspex sheets be better to the sides with the top wired?

As stated above raw unfiltered honey will prevent infection and promote healing --- the chicken wire is more than likely the cause --- what are the temps during the day ? 78 F at night is pretty warm dragons usually like it cooler around 65-75 F -- I have not heard of anyone keeping their dragons outside all the time-- what are you feeding her and are you giving any supplements? Dab the raw honey on the chin a couple of times a day -- if your feeding crickets please do not leave them in the tank w/ her -- it looks like they would get out anyway but they will go straight to the wound -- as far as the perspex I dont know what that is - -

Put in on the sore.
My opinion on the wire replace w/ perspex or wood.
Sadie can help more on outside enclosure. All my dragons are inside w/ the proper lighting.

Hi Sadie

It’s anything between 75-95 with Europe experiencing high temps. The previous owner indicated she is about 2.5 years of age and was kept outside in the summer and indoors in the enclosure we have taken from them.

I see --ok well the UVB is great shes getting natural sunlight and she has shade for when she needs it - this perspex is it see thru or solid material - I wouldnt want her in something she cant see out of - I have reached out to a couple of people about the enclosure --

I haven’t bought the replacement for the wire mesh yet. I had in mind to get clear perspex.

This would be to 4 sides with it vented on top to not contain the heat.

Btw. Thank you both so much for the quick replies it really appreciated!

Ideas for enclosure.. First (2) for lighting Third Metal glass bought at PetSmart. Wood built for male BD in the tank BUT he just couldn't adjust. Female in just for show purposes. Wooden built recent not fully decor yet. Picking up Red 50/50 monster tomorrow that will go in wood enclosure.

If the UVB is more than 15 inches above the basking decor its too high ---

I wasnt sure what that was so I asked someone and he told me this
perspex is a brand of sheet plastic like acrylic. it would work for an enclosure but might get scratched more easily than glass.
