I have about an 8 month old beardie and he has a severe case of mbd...we got him about a month ago and the person that had him before us did NOT take care of him at all. When I first got him he wouldn't eat, couldn't move, he was basically dead. He has improved by being able to eat on his own after 2 weeks of syringe feeding and moving around more, but there are still problems. His tail I'm afraid is going to fall off if I don't find a way to get it back to normal...it is very dry and brittle feeling. Also his toes on one foot have fallen off and his back left leg doesn't look so good. I have had him to the vet and he told me I am doing everything correctly and to keep it up but I am really concerned about his tail and what to do for it. He isn't walking yet but I know he's going to because he keeps moving his back legs like he's really trying. Just needing some tips! Thanks.

I would get another vet. If the tail is crusty you just don't wait for it to fall off, it's tail rot and it spreads if not taken care of. The dead tail needs to be amputated so that the infection doesn't spread. He will do just fine without a whole tail. My girl Dolly has about half her tail missing and she is doing just fine.

Have you ever tried calcium injections with yours before? I was thinking about doing those not for the tail but just because of the MBD...I will take him to another vet to see what they think tomorrow

I agree with patsy on going to another vet as he needs injections to help boost him up and will likely need calcium injections here out. I agree that tail if tail rot will need to be surgically removed, if the infection continues it goes up to organs :( any limb that is in jeopardy could lead to infection in such a weakened state.
Keep us posted on him..got any pictures?

I will take one of him tomorrow...his tail is just really dry but it isn't any darker than the rest of his body I was reading and come across something that said it could be from where he can't shed on his own due to the MBD, could this be a possibility?

A photo could help determine if it's stuck shed or a tail rot issue. Being less mobile due to the MBD, he may struggle to shed. My girl, Ruth, has MBD and she needs some help with shedding more often than not.

Did the vet offer anything? Calcium injections, feeding tips? If not, find another one. Go through vets like tissues until you find someone competent, who can help you and your little boy.

Make sure you're adding extra calcium and keep the UVB lights on for 10 to 12 hours. This is usually the time of year where you shorten photo periods, but this guy needs UVB more than seasonal light schedule right now.

Once you and your dragon get out of the woods, I can make a video of some exercises my vet showed me to help Ruth with her mobility. He's trying to move which is a great sign. Once he gets his strength up, the progress he can make may surprise you :)

Bless his heart ... I agree with Eavlynn find a vet that you feel is knowledgeable about MBD in dragons...When you get a chance take a close up of his tail need to see it closer to see if it's stuck shed or rot..
It is super important to keep good enclosure husbandry for special needs, stay on top of UVB change outs to optimize what he's getting, good supplements, good foods live and greens.

He needs a vet asap. A good vet, not a moron. And he needs it pronto. The rear legs and tail likely need amputated. It looks like stuck shed restricted the blood flow causing tissue death. He also has spinal deformity, meaning the MBD is severe. That baby needs surgery and advanced treatment, this isn't something that can be handled properly at home.

I travel over an hour to see my vet, but I was considering flying to specialists in Florida before I found him! Your little guy might still have a fighting chance if you act quickly. It's hard to say how long he's been in this condition before you got him. It takes a while for a condition this serious to present itself, and it's going to be a long road to recovery for everyone. He'll need a lot of special care from you.

I know...I have been trying my best I sat out in the sun for 5 hours for two weeks and he started doing a lot better moves, eats, and drinks water. I syringe fed him baby food and I still do that but not as much because he's able to eat on his own usually about 5- 10 crickets a day. The weather where I live is getting colder and I don't take him outside if it isn't at least 70 degrees and I am making him an appointment first thing in the morning!! The person that had him before me said that he was getting better but she just didn't have time to care for him anymore and she really did not know enough about them to care for him properly...thanks for your responses!!

I've never done calcium injections. My girls' MBD isn't advanced yet so we just give her oral calcium. The tail in the photo doesn't look like tail rot, but it looks like severe MBD. I would find a vet that is an exotic vet knowledgeable of MBD.
