Is going to the vet necessary?

My dragon has an injury on the end of his tail that has turned completely black over the last 2 weeks. Have been giving him betadine baths and rubbing neosporin on it twice a day and am not seeing any changes yet (only been doing it for a week). It's not spreading as of now, but not improving. It's definitely tail rot, but I definitely don't have the money to take him to the vet. I read in multiple places that I might not have to because the bad part of the tail could just fall off and then if I keep up with betadine and neosporin, keeping it clear from infection, it will heal. Seems like nature would just be taking it's course in caring for this injury. Thoughts?
