I did the ultimate NO NO, I bought a baby beardie yesterday from Petco. I asked to hold he/she, I think the name is going to be Yo-Yo, and I was hooked;). Well I have a hugh colony of roaches and she/he loves them, I have hundreds of new borns but how many should I feed a day.
Yo-Yo weights 4 gramsand is about 6 inches from nose to tip of tail

You hear nothing but horror stories about the pet store chains. I got my starter roaches from Shane at Roachland.com and they just exploded. But my 2 big beardies are so picky, they may go a week without eating so it gives the roaches a break and boy do they multiply. He/she doesnt want to be messed with so its gonna be a while till he/she is comfortable with me. But I have lots of patience:)

Exclusive Care Info Library - Bearded Dragon - Too Little? Too Much? ... Food

Too Little? Too Much? ….. Food
Author: Robin Moniz

I am often asked how much “live insects” should my dragon eat. I find this question difficult to answer as each dragon is different. It also depends on the size of prey and what prey you are feeding. Dragons also go through growth spurts where their appetite is up and they are eating like champs and other times they aren't eating as much so their owner rightfully so becomes concerned. The rule of thumb is to feed them as much live insects they can eat in 15 minutes.

There is some misinformation out there. & I have heard that some people are saying that a baby dragon for instance should eat 50 crickets per sitting. Babies eat 2x - 3x a day. That is 150 crickets!! That’s insane. It is no wonder when people hear that they panic when their dragon is only eating 10-15 crickets a sitting. First thing I think of when someone tells me their dragon is eating 50 crickets a sitting is that their dragon's food isn't large enough.

Remember, with the exception of worms... The bearded dragon's crickets should be approximately the size of the space between their eyes. If they are getting properly sized prey they aren't going to eat 50 crickets a sitting. If you are supplementing your feeds with worms - remember the worms actually have more “meat” on them (in most cases) thus your dragon will eat fewer of them.

For example: A full size superworm is probably equal to 3-4 crickets.

You really don't want to gorge your pogona vitticeps with food. Generally a dragon will usually stop eating when they are full - BUT there are some things that dragons have a hard time resisting - like supers or other worms. Particularly with supers and mealworms you have to exercise some control when feeding them and if a dragon gorges on them and eats too many I can almost bet they will vomit that day or the next day. As with anyone; it is difficult for a dragon after he/she vomits. They feel crappy for a couple of days, they can become dehydrated and because they don't feel well they won’t usually eat for a day or so afterward. Then you have to reintroduce food in smaller quantities so as to not upset their already sensitive belly.

I have also Purchased from, not Petco, but Petsmart, which either is not necessarily a NO\NO. It is possible for you to get a very nice healthy BDs from chain stores, if you pick them out properly. After all, they need homes too! What I don't suggest, is taking the majority of their advice, while there is the odd instance that the associate, or so called 'Reptile Specialist' (Who got the title by passing a test that is more concerned on how to properly place turtle food on the shelves the right way, than proper husbandry.) is actually familiar with their care, they are few & far between.

I got mine from Petsmart. I also work there. I can not speak for other stores or chains but I am very impressed at our Petcare section. They all pass tests that do deal with signs of stress and how/when to feed and then they get supervised hands on training for a while. Very few of our animals get sick but when they do we have a very good relationship with our vet. I do wish that this could be said without a doubt for all chain stores. Our petcare manager has a ton of personal experiance and has done tons of research to make sure our animals are cared for properly and that our associates know what to answer when asked but I do partially agree with the not taking advice. While I trust our manager I have heard some pretty odd things from other stores and chains.

i also got my bearded dragon from pet smart, not a huge deal. in fact so long as its healthy looking i would hope more people would save bearded dragons from the cramped cages, bad food, and horrable lighting(my petsmart has all cages at 80F and 60% humidity)

Although I now frequent two awesome reptile shops in my area (Underground Reptiles and Ben Siegel Reptiles), my little Sputin was my first reptile, and I got him as a Valentine's Day gift for my wife from . . . Pet Supermarket ojo! He turned out to be a one in a million (since he is of course my little baby). I would not get a reptile from there again, but he did turn out pretty damn awesome.
