hides for bd

i recently had to take the hide out of my bearded dragon enclosure because he would try to bask on it but it was on the cool side. Is it necessary to have a hide in your bd enclosure he never goes inside of it ,he just kind of lays on top of it.

It is optional, but if he is basking on the cool side, is he staying there? Usually it would just mean he was hot and wanted to cool down for a bit.

no i took it out i think he was just used to it because it was kind of a make shift hide and basking spot and i recently got a new cage and that was the only familiar decor from his old set up so he might have just been use to the familiar object
