Hey guys, just introducing myself and my new Beardie to the scene. But first a little bit of background story.

My birthday was on the 21st of December. Since I was a little kid, I always wanted a lizard pet, but my parents would never budge.
Anywhoo, I turned 27 this December, and my sister got me a bearded dragon which I was NOT expecting. Unfortunately, the one she got me was really sluggish from the start and soon fell ill, I decided to take it back to Pets Smart so that they could properly care for it, I took my refund and went to Petco and picked up this guy the day before yesterday.

The people at Petco told me they had the same problem with the "Fancy Bearded Dragons" they had received, and had already lost a couple. So I'm guessing Petsmart and Petco have the same supplier, and am praying it was nothing I did to the poor little guy.

But on to happy news....

Since there were absolutely no other stores in the area that carried the "fancy" type, I took the generic kind; which doesn't bother me all that much, since this guy has a LOT of personality, and that's all that counts ;) I named him Randall, and I'm sure all of you will get the Monsters Inc. reference.

Randall has been in my care 2 days now, and he seems to be doing fine. He is drinking, eating, basking, and giving me the evil eye as I type this. He shed his entire coat last night, which was pretty amazing, I left for the gym at 8, I came back at 10:30 and he looked like he had exploded. I read that a warm bath could help him out, but I felt it unwise to bathe him that late, since I was to turn the lights off soon. But he did a pretty good job of it on his own, scraping against the bark in his log.

He ate ten crickets this morning, and I am wondering if that was because I had run out of crickets last night and was only able to feed him 8 throughout the whole day. So my first question would be: About how many crickets should my beardie this size be eating per sitting; provided that I put in veggies in the morning [noting that he really isn't touching his carrot/squash/bell pepper mix at all], and feed crickets twice daily?

My second question: About gut-feeding crickets. What is a good, inexpensive, hassle-free way to gut-feed these little suckers? Right now I'm working with mushed up wheat cereal and a moist cotton ball.

Third Question: He seems to be very scared of me. I've read you should handle your beardie regularly, to get him used to people and whatnot, but since he is EXTREMELY skittish, and only been in his new surroundings for two days, I don't want to overstress him right now. Any input?

Anyways, sorry for the wall-of-text, but I am a new owner, and there is a LOT of information out there that doesn't always add up. I decided it was wise to just give you guys my information, so I could get feedback that pertains to my situation better.

And now on to the fun stuff, PICTURES!!

Sorry for the bad pictures, but my digicam broke, I have to settle for cell phone pictures, for now.

I won't try to answer your questions because I have the same ones-lolllll I bought my little guy/gal from PetSmart and he looks just like yours. He's hiding in the plants right now. I'll be checking back to see what the answers are. I know theres a Bearded dragon care sheet somewhere on here, but can't remember where exactly... anywho congratulations again.

I'll let the others answer your questions since I adopted an adult and don't have first hand experience with baby Beardies, but I just wanted to pop in and say congrats! Randall is super cute ;D

I'm going to try to help you. I am new to this site myself, but have a bearded dragon I have had for over a year, one that is 6 months old and a TINY baby. Beardies should be allowed to eat as much as they can eat in a 15 minute time span.......2 to 3 times a day. As for handling,I found it helpful to put a wash cloth or old t-shirt I had worn or handled to let mine get used to my scent, thankfully when I got mine they had been handled by the previous owner/breeder and weren't skittish at all. As for the crickets I use the jelly liquid stuff and fish food or orange cubes to feed them. Randall is adorable and I love the name. Hope fully someone can help you better.

Hi and welcome. Randall is soooo tiny and sooo cute! Sorry about the first little guy. It sounds like bad breeding based on Petco's comments.

As Sara pointed out, beardies under 1 year should eat anywhere from 25-75 crickets daily. Feed as much as they will eat in the first 10-15 minutes. Do this 2-3 times per day.

You can offer your crickets the same veggies/greens that you want your beardie to eat. Most babies will not touch the salad, but continue to offer it daily. Once they reach 1 year of age, this is their main source of food daily.

Right now Randall thinks you are a predator. Don't give up. When you go in the viv, put your hand down in front of him. Massage his nose and gently and slower move your fingers under his belly. Lift him out this way.

Yeah, I saw your thread right before I made mine...looked like an active community and it gave me the motivation to register and start an account. :D

Thanks a ton for the help. Yeah, I bought the orange liquid cube thingies today for my crickets. They seem happy for now; completely unaware of impending doom to come...

Hah, yeah I must look like a GIANT predator to him..I'll try the shirt idea definitely, also, I had been trying what you said about approaching him from the front and have had the most success that way. Randall does NOT like to be ambushed!

Wow, 25-75 crickets daily? I just got back from Petco and the lady looked at me like a monster when I told her he was eating between 10-12 daily (she said that is TOO much). Now I am completely confused, because I've read that you're supposed to feed him twice a day, and feed him until he gets full. But that petco chick was pretty adamant, and she said she has one, so can people help me clarify please?

Also, I bought some waxworms to alternate his diet, but I am unsure of how many to feed him, since they are kind of fatty. I know general rule of thumb (I think) is that you feed him till he gets full, so I put in seven (although he is uninterested since they are still dormant atm), but I'm sure if I give him all 20 worms right now he will eat all of them (he is a glutton after all). So my general confusion comes from; is seven too little and will the poor guy starve? Or is it too much? Also, if seven is just right, should I feed him more worms later today, or is that + his morning salad (which he didn't touch like always) enough for today?

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, I realize it's the introduction thread, not the "ask a million questions thread".

Sandy pretty much took care of all your questions.

I did want to second the wax worms. They are a treat and not a staple. I am not certain about feeding them to a beardie so young, but I tend to stay on the side of caution.

Also, regarding pet stores advice, congratulations. You have completed your admittance to the incorrect information from pet store club. We have all been there. There are so many giving wrong information. As far as that particular worker having a beardie, umm, I wonder how old and how long she/he has had them. You are in good hands now. We have a lot of knowledgeable members, both seasoned beardie slaves and successful breeders.

hello and welcome to the forum, great little beardie you got there, just be careful not to shock the little critter too much as can be fatal to them.
Be wary about pet store advice unless is a specialist shop as alot of big stores give false info as only read from a script on what they been told by their trainers or bosses and alot are not very knowledgable on the subject everyone has fallen for the same at one point or another take a copy of the caresheet on this forum there are plenty of people with plenty of knowledge from all over the world on here so any questions im sure will be answered to the best of everyones knowledge but still we all still learning ourselfs about these little guys shame to here about your first little lad hope all will work out well for you.
