Hi everyone, I just got a beardie with my son. We are trying to determine the sex but I don't see any bumps. Pet store said he is about a year old. Do you see anything?
To determine the sex of your bearded dragon you need to hold him/her flat in one hand and with the other hand, very gently lift the tail up and back just slightly, you don't want to hurt him/her. Look at the base of the tail right before the vent one lump in the middle is a girl, 2 lumps is a boy. If you do a google search for images of "how to sex a bearded dragon" you will see what I'm talking about.
Thank you - but in the picture I took (posted above), I dont see any bumps at all. Is that because he/she is too young? Am I looking for the wrong thing?
By the way, the angle of the picture, it looks like I am holding him by the neck, which was not the case. Just a weird angle as I bent over and curbed the camera to take the picture of the bottom of the tail. We are always more than gentle with him.
You aren't going to see the lumps by just looking at the tail. You have to bend it back a bit and it tightens the skin and you can see the lumps.
I didn't even think you were being rough with it! LOL! We've all been there trying to take a picture and holding the beardie with the other hand. Not the easiest thing to do.
There's also another trick but you may need some help. When you bend the tail back you can shine a flashlight from the top side and you should be able to see one lump or two.
