Poplar or cabinet grade pine is dirt cheap and safe when properly sealed. I would choose pvc over melamine if looking for a material that does not require sealing. Stay away from melamine particle board and/or mdf. Melamine/prefinished plywood are better choices.

for mine i got cedar plywood and it was like $30 a board [emoji28]
