Butternut Squash for my Beardie

Hi everyone,
I want to try feeding butternut squash. I looked online for information on how to give it to my lil guy. There didn’t seem to be any good info. Can I give it to him raw or do I have to cook/steam it before to soften it? He’s about 5 1/2 months old and seems to not want his veggies he’s been eating since I got him.

Thanks

I have never tried butternut... with the other squashes I have seen conflicting information about raw vs cooked - I usually give yellow squash, and I have done cooked and raw. Usually I do bake it in the oven. I only started doing some raw when he was an adult.

All squashes are good to go, take a look at the links below several of our comments as we have links for general care as well as a link for food from Beautifuldragons.com they have the most detailed info

You need to cut it up quite small, or use a coarse grater. Store in an airtight container, it goes off pretty quickly. Neither of my dragons will eat squash, but I keep giving it to them in the hopes that they might eat it one day, as its really nutritious.

I grate mine. When they were babies though, I cut them into small cubes and microwaved them for a few seconds to soften them up. However, cooking veggies, can sometimes change the nutritional properties.

I guess different beardies have different tastes bc Norbert LOVES butternut squash! The second day I had him I fed him little cut up pieces off my finger one at a time and he loves it!

Yes, different beardies have different tastes. Try having 3 that all have different tastes. I have one that loves mango and 2 that don't. 2 love strawberries 1 doesn't. One loves mustard greens where the other hate it. I have to buy stuff to keep everyone happy!
