Does brumation come at a certain point in a beardies life? What should I expect? Is this something I can prevent or is it inevitable?

Brumation is a natural happening in a BDs life. It is a safety mechanism hard wired into their system for when in the wild, temps drop with the seasons & food becomes scarce. Attempts to halt Brumation should not be made, once it has begun. Keeping temps & Day\Night schedules constant & consistent will Sometimes stave off brumation from setting in, as they would have no reason to sense a season change, but this often makes little difference & brumation happens anyway. Not all BDs will brumate in captivity, although it is a common happening. Generally, although there are exceptions, it is rare for a BD younger than a year old to go into brumation.

Just read your post. My Spike went into brumation the end of October and I gently woke him up yesterday....almost 4 months and he was younger than a year when he decided to go to sleep. Very unusual. He is awake now, ate a little bit and is back in his hammock. I turned off his lights when he started brumation and just let him be. It will be interesting to see if he decides to go back to sleep. Whenever I get a good poop from him I am going to get a fecal count to make sure he is healthy.
