I had my first pet death yesterday. In 10 years of owning dogs, cats, and multiple reptiles I have never had a mortality (aside from a couple ill-fated fish). I came home and my eastern painted turtle, Herman, had passed. No signs of trauma or illness. He hadn't been eating much, but they tend to eat less over the winter even with a tank heater. I got him full grown from Petsmart, so no idea how old he was or if he had any preexisting conditions... I'm devastated. And now I'm extra paranoid about my other babies - my snake isn't eating, my beardie has pinworms, and my dog needs surgery for lump removal and biopsy. Stress level through the roof!!! 2017 is not starting off well. I just wanted to share with people that understand the loss of a reptile friend, as most people don't.

Cheers, I hope the new year finds everyone and their babies happy and healthy.

Sorry for your loss. Never easy losing an animal, no matter what species. You took him from probably a tiny petsmart tank and gave him an amazing life. Just take your time to mourn and give extra attention to all your other critters

Well this happened... I wasn't planning on getting another turtle yet, but I have been on the lookout for a southern paint for years and I happened to find a breeder that had one! They are common in other states, but not Texas.

His name is Flash, and he is already making trouble. When I first got him I kept him for a day in a Styrofoam fish cooler while I was getting his supplies. I came home from lunch to check on him and he was GONE! Either he scaled the one foot high walls or our dog somehow managed to get into the 'dog proof' room and fish him out while leaving no trace of the deed. Thankfully I found him across the room behind a tortoise tank. I thought he was dead, but he revived when I put him back in the water, and barring internal injuries from the drop he should be fine. He is now in a secure tank out of reach of puppy dogs. Wish us luck!
