I just rescued a 3 year old male Bearded Dragon from a family that had it for 3 years. It is in 50+ gallon fish tank. He(?) seems to be very friendly. He will cling to my shirt for hours as I stroke his back. I have several other reptiles and am not too worried about care. I just need to understand feeding. I have read that I am supposed to feed him enough insects to eat in 15 minutes 2 times per day. I currently have a colony of Dubia roaches. I think if I put him in the tank with all my roaches, he would eat them all in 15 minutes as aggressively as he eats them. How many should he be eating per feeding? Should I let the roaches roam in the tank or keep them confined in a bowl? How do I tell if he is a good weight?

Hey Jim I'm not a nutrition specialist or a specialist at all but that insect cricket feeding is mainly for juvenile dragons. I think insects are part of diet but veggies should become a better staple in his diet at 3 years old. In sure someone will chime in with nutrition. That was a nice thing you did for your beardie. They are awesome and good luck.

Adults should get a salad every day. I do bugs every other day with mine and they usually eat about 6 large supers before they walk away and are done. Sometimes I offer every other day and they don't want any bugs. I mix It up, they like supers, silk worms and hornworms. Sometimes I can get them to eat dubia but not always.

Dubias are like crack to my bearded dragon. I have to limit him so he doesn't hurt himself by over-ingesting, the little glutton. Congrats on your new family member! Beardies are the best. Adults eat more greens than insects, as the others said above. You will just have to experiment to see what he likes, how much he will eat, etc. Every beardie is a little different. Just follow the general guidelines for ratio of insect : plant consumption and you should be fine. Have fun!

Welcome and that's awesome that you have him.. Under a few of our comments you will find a few links and within those we have put together pretty much anything you may need... There are food item links, lighting, supplements and much more.. feel free to ask any questions as we have a very wide knowledge base to help..
Mine are both adults and I give them salads every day and bug every other day.. I do give my male a few dubia each day as he is a bit younger than my female.
Typically their belly shouldn't drag on the floor when walking around.. If you post pictures we can help
