I bought my Bearded Dragon at a pet store who took very good care of him. They handled him daily and he has been great tempered since day one. They didn't have any paper work on him however and I don't know his age exactly. I was told he was a male but was just wondering if anybody can confirm this possibly by this picture. Our son named him Troy and we are hoping he is a Troy! Thanks.

I didn't have a chance to check. I'm almost afraid to find out at this point. Can you change a name after having him for over 8 months if he turns out to be a she? As long as I don't check, he will stay a he. Does anybody agree with that thinking?

Something like putting your head in the sand ... ;) .

You should know if it is a female or not, so you know to watch for the signs of egg laying, so preparations can be made, if/when needed.

Never knew a female bearded dragon can lay eggs without a mate. Still should have plenty of time to keep my head in the sand. I will have to explain all this to our 11 year old son if he happens to find an egg in the cage one day. My wife thinks he must be a male because all he does is lay around and eat all day. I will check for sure tomorrow.

If it happens, he likely won't find just one egg, more like 25-30. Waiting to find the eggs in the enclosure is not a viable plan. It would mean that it held the eggs until it could no longer & laid out of desperation because it could not find a suitable area to bury them in. This raises the very real possibility of becoming 'Egg Bound', a very serious complication. So yes, we should take our heads out of the sand, check & find out, for sure ;) .

Not all females do ... Some won't ever, others will regularly. My Sandy didn't lay her first infertile clutch until she was 6+ years old, yet Dinah would lay yearly, has laid as many as 3 infertile clutches, 83 eggs total, in one year.

As an update it appears Troy is a male. When I told my son there was a chance Troy could be a female and lay eggs, he was happy because that would be the only way he could get more Bearded Dragons. Luckily that won't be happening.

Also, why does he wear the gas mask in the video? Should I be in full SWAT gear to sex a dragon? Please don't quote that out of context...
